LANSING – State Representatives Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) and Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) today encouraged Monroe County women to take advantage of a free health care fair for women who are 40 and over. Mammography nurses and technologists will conduct clinical breast exams and provide mammograms at the fair, which will be held Saturday in Monroe.
"Early detection is vital to fighting breast cancer," said Ebli, who is a breast cancer survivor herself. "I encourage Monroe County women to take advantage of this free event to protect their health and well-being. Not only will women be able to take care of their yearly mammogram at the fair, but they will be able to learn about the importance of monthly breast self-examinations and other preventative measures that can help us live happy and healthy lives."
Ebli knows firsthand that early detection saves lives – she was diagnosed with breast cancer after a mammogram showed an abnormal reading in 2004. A biopsy later revealed a malignancy.
The fair will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mercy Memorial Women's HealthCenter, 718 N. Macomb St. in Monroe. The event is sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio, Mercy Memorial Hospital System and the Monroe Center Cancer Connection.
"Far too many people are going without health insurance, and others are struggling to pay the high cost of health care," said Angerer, chair of the House Health Policy Committee. "I hope the women of our community are able to take a little time out of their busy schedules for themselves and attend this free event and check on their health. By offering events that bring together health care experts and offer potentially life-saving resources in one place, we are creating a safer and healthier Michigan for women."
Uninsured or underinsured women who are 40 and over are welcome to attend the fair. Those under 40 are required to have a doctor's order. To register for the event, call (734) 240-440. For any other questions regarding the event, please call (734) 240-4552.
