Ebli Applauds Congress for Putting Farm Bill into Law

Override of Presidential veto completes action on bill, protects Michigan farmers

LANSING – State Representative Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) praised the U.S. House and Senate today for overriding President Bush's veto on the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, ensuring that all provisions of the Farm Bill are enacted into law.

"This is an extremely important piece of legislation, not only for Monroe County, but for communities across the country," Ebli said. "This federal legislation offers financial stability to farmers during these difficult economic times when markets and expenses are so volatile. By providing a safety net to fall back on, Michigan farmers will be able to provide food and fuel for our residents, and continue to be a driving force behind moving our economy forward."

After its initial approval, the Farm Bill was quickly vetoed by President Bush last May. Just last week, Congress supplied the votes necessary to override the veto as the bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a vote of 318-106 and passed the Senate with a vote of 81-15.

In addition to providing the stability for our farmers, the farm bill will also improve and encourage national nutritional programs; expand and improve conservation programs to help farmers protect the environment; support fruit and vegetable producers; and encourage renewable energy production from cellulosic sources.

A House Resolution drafted by Ebli to encourage an override of the veto was scheduled for a hearing tomorrow in the House Agriculture Committee, but Ebli decided to withdraw the measure after the override was approved by Congress.

"I applaud Congress for its quick action and steadfast commitment to this bill," Ebli said. "They truly understand the many positive steps this bill takes. Farmers in Michigan and across the country will be better off because of it."
