LANSING – State Representative Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) today joined supporters at the State Capitol to recognize Deaf and Hard of Hearing Day, an event to raise awareness and show support for Michigan residents who have hearing and communications difficulties. On Tuesday, the House passed a resolution proclaiming May as Hearing Loss Awareness Month in Michigan.
"It was inspiring to see so many people travel to the Capitol to raise awareness for the hard of hearing," Ebli said. "Whether it is housing assistance, health insurance coverage, or even support services, there are a number of ways the state can help people who are deaf and hard of hearing. Today's event shows the commitment that exists across Michigan to meet these issues head on."
Ebli was joined at the Capitol by her daughter, Tori, who studied American Sign Language in college. Tori was inspired to learn American Sign Language by Ida resident Kelley Wyse.
The event held at the State Capitol today was sponsored by the Hearing Loss Association of Michigan and the Michigan Deaf Association. The event also was held in conjunction with the monthly meeting of the Michigan Legislative Disability Caucus.
"We have a responsibility as lawmakers to support each and every one of our residents," Ebli said. "My daughter's dedication to the hard of hearing has raised my awareness, and now I'm committed to returning doing the same. Hopefully my colleagues in both the House and Senate took notice of the important issues facing people who are hard of hearing today, and we can help them receive the assistance they deserve."
