LANSING – State Representative Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) today voted in favor of a plan that will speed up construction projects at universities and community colleges across the state, including Monroe County Community College (MCCC). The plan, which now heads to the Governor for her signature, will create more than 8,000 jobs for Michigan workers.
"My top priority as a lawmaker is to create more good-paying jobs now for our workers and to turn our economy around," Ebli said. "Not only will our investment in MCCC help build a well-educated workforce that will bring new jobs to Michigan, but we are putting our displaced workers back on the job. This plan creates the jobs we need now, and it will build the workforce Michigan needs to bring new jobs to our state and become a leader in the 21st century global economy."
Using a mix of state and local funding, MCCC will build a $17 million New Career Technology Center to support technology instructional programs. The project will create 272 local jobs.
The plan passed by the House today will create 8,329 jobs by funding construction projects at universities and community colleges across the state. Projects range from expanding existing facilities to constructing new buildings, which will give Michigan schools the resources they need to prepare our students to succeed in the 21st century global economy.
The plan passed today is part of larger initiative to create more than 29,000 jobs across the state. The overall initiative included hundreds of construction projects at universities, colleges, airports, military facilities and state parks.
"By helping us complete our New Career Technology Center, this investment is giving us the tools it needs to train our students for 21st century jobs," said Dr. David Nixon, President of MCCC. "MCCC, its students and all of Michigan will realize the benefits of this investment for years to come. I want to sincerely thank Rep. Ebli for all her work in making this plan a reality."
