MONROE – State Representative Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) today applauded the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) for awarding a $17,000 Housing Resource Fund grant to Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County.
"I'm extremely pleased that Monroe County is receiving these much-needed funds," Ebli said. "The MSHDA Housing Resource Fund grants play an important role in improving our communities. Especially in these tough economic times, when a number of our hard-working families are losing their homes to foreclosure, these funds will help the residents of Monroe County hold on to their piece of the American Dream. Additionally, by building the home, our students are learning the value of hard work so they can eventually become a member of Michigan's highly-skilled job force and hopefully own their own home."
The Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County is building one home in the City of Monroe with the help of students from Monroe Public Schools Youth Educational Construction Program. This is the fourth time the two groups have paired to build a new home. The MSHDA grant funds will be used to purchase construction materials for the project.
Overall, the MSHDA Housing Resource fund awarded 18 grants and more than $2 million in funding to organizations across the state.
"We are extremely grateful MSHDA awarded us these funds to help us build a brand new home for a family in Monroe County," said Debora Wykes, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County. "Together with MSHDA and Monroe Public Schools, we are providing great educational opportunities for students and helping communities stabilize their neighborhoods."
