Monroe County Community College Applauds Ebli, Jobs Plan

$17M project targets Monroe County Community College

MONROE – State Representative Kate Ebli (D-Monroe) drew kudos from officials at Monroe County Community College for supporting a $17 million project that will create 272 local jobs.

"The technology building is long overdue," said Parmeshwar Coomar, Dean of Industrial Technology at Monroe County Community College. "This will not only improve our campus, but will also help to create jobs in the areas of high-tech manufacturing, health services and the energy industry."

Monroe County Community College is set to receive $17 million for the construction of a technology center. The new 60,000-square-foot facility will support technology instructional programs for students and faculty. The current building has outlived its usefulness both from the viewpoint of sheer space and layout. It cannot house modern welding, construction, automotive, electronics, design, manufacturing, or new training programs, such as alternative energy, green construction, and biomedical electronics. The new building will better equip the school to train students for good-paying jobs in high demand fields.

The project is part of a statewide push to fund construction projects at universities, colleges, airports, military facilities and state parks. The plan passed the House on Wednesday and now heads to the Senate for final approval.

"My highest priority is turning our economy around and getting Michigan's workers back on the job," Ebli said. "By investing in our schools, we will ensure that they will have the resources to train our students in the technical, high-demand fields of the 21st century. I urge the Senate to act on this quickly."
